The Lessons from an Overcomer

While travelling on June 30, 2024, I took some time to listen to a particular sermon titled; LESSONS FROM AN OVERCOMER (DESTINY-DEFINING PRINCIPLES) by Apostle Joshua Selman, and it spoke extensively to believers about the trying life of whoever would be called an “Overcomer”.

In this blog post, I will be sharing my takeaways from the sermon, but I’d highly encourage you to find some time to watch the entire sermon.

1. Ignorance is not a demon

All men start in ignorance by default. The cure for ignorance is the discipline to stay with light until light drives away the darkness.

2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Receiving approval from God as far as destiny is concerned is from knowledge.

There is a relationship between laziness and ignorance.

Proverbs 1:20-33 Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets: She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, [saying], How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you. Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

2. You can’t have consistent results until your desires and your expectations are defined.

Luke 18:39-41 And they which went before rebuked him, that he should hold his peace: but he cried so much the more, [Thou] Son of David, have mercy on me. And Jesus stood, and commanded him to be brought unto him: and when he was come near, he asked him, Saying, What wilt thou that I shall do unto thee? And he said, Lord, that I may receive my sight.

3. People are not really affected by what happens to them; they are affected by the meaning they connect to the happenings

People are not really affected by what happens, they are affected by the meaning and the definition, and also the definition of what happens to them.

When you learn to give things proper meanings, offense will be minimized in your life. When you wrongly interprets happenings in your life, you will perpetually live in offense.

4. You need encouragement/motivation to start anything, but it will take discipline and endurance to be consistent in life.

The secret to starting is motivation, but the secret to remaining and to be consistent, is discipline and endurance.

You are not disciplined if you do not have:

  • Staying power
  • The power of restraint (the ability to say NO to many good things in life).

Beyond the initial motivation people give you, you need encouragement by the Spirit of God, and discipline to stay in your course, ministry, life and destiny to excel.

5. Do not be hasty with words or commitment. Think, pray and seek counsel before making destiny-defining decisions.

Humans are largely interest-motivated and self-centered. In the presence of interest, everyone is a saint; you know people in truth when there is an awareness that their expectations are disappointed.

Avoid making hasty decisions to your detriment or peril.

6. Critics and naysayers do two important things needed to actualize destiny:

1. Critics and naysayers confirm that you are making notable progress.

2. Critics and naysayers can also be used by God to caution you from decline and destruction.

If a person is doing something and there are no critics and naysayers, you’re not necessarily making any progress.

Criticism is an opinion harshly explained. You will never live in a world where all men love you, it doesn’t exist. Conversely, if you live in a world where all men hate you, you’re doing something very wrong consistently. You need both supporters and critics.

Unfortunately, neither of these categories of people are invited. The world system was designed to trigger their arrival, uninvited but when where you are in life needs their actions.
